Many people start their own business just because they are tired of their job. You want to be in charge of your own destiny and not have to answer to a boss anymore, I think that anyone can understand those sentiments. Your job makes you work crazy hours, you are always on call and the boss wants to know what you have done all day.
You leave your job and start a business and you are working all the hours you can and doing every job that you can take, your phone never stops and your wife wants to know what you have done all day.
Will Your Business Make Money When You Are Not There?
This is how you know whether you have a business or a job. If you can be away from the office for a week (not on the road working but on vacation) and still earn money then you have a business. If the minute you stop working to go away your income stops then you have really built yourself a job. It may be a well paid job and you may feel like you have more control but if you can not take a day off without seeing a drop in income you have a job not a business.
There is nothing wrong with starting your business off working alone and you will almost put in as many (probably more) hours than you ever would in a normal job. The problem is when you stay that way. Unless your business is growing and you have a plan on how to get to the point where you can take a weeks vacation without losing income you are really just building a job (which you may be able to sell one day) rather than a business.
What Happens If You Break A Leg
A family friend started a car repair business and was going great guns until he had an accident and cracked 3 ribs. This meant he could not do any heavy lifting, could not put any pressure on anything and could not fix cars. Since his whole business was based on him fixing cars not being able to fix them was a problem.
Do you have insurance to cover that kind of once in a lifetime situation, does your spouse know anything about what you do, do you have enough money in the bank to cover your bills until you get better?
A Job With Few Benefits
If you are reading this and thinking to yourself how you have built yourself a job not a business (and a job with few benefits) you can change that. You can start to change the way you work and build a business rather than just a job.
